This module asks young people to explore some of the ways cyber criminals use personal data to commit crime. It can be hard to understand, when we’re young, the importance of our reputation and our credit rating, when we’re older. This unit asks the children to think about what could compromise their reputation.
Identity fraud is a crime on the rise. It has been made significantly easier by technology. Lots of information is held about us online. Personal data such as our name, address, email and phone number is valuable: illegal hackers trade such information on the Dark Web. Identity criminals actually target young people because they have completely clean credit ratings.
Criminals can be creative in the methods they use to gain information about people but there are ways we can stop them. By being careful and protecting our data with strong passwords and not oversharing when we’re online, we make life harder for illegal hackers.
Cyber criminals are targeting you.
